The area of Westfeld – energy-efficient and integrated energy supply of a new part of the city
Markus Balmer,
Head of sales and a member of the executive board, IWB
In the area of Westfeld in Basel, the housing cooperative and IWB have implemented a decentralised and highly efficient energy supply. In addition to electricity and heating, the comprehensive concept also includes environmentally friendly mobility solutions and telecom services.
The transformation of the former hospital into a small and eccentric neighbourhood creates affordable living space. It combines living, working, leisure and shopping with over 500 cooperative apartments. The heating, cooling and power supply of the district meets the highest ecological, economic and technical standards.

CST – infrastructure for an underground supply of goods in Switzerland
Klaus Helmut Juch,
CTO – head of technology + construction, Cargo Sous Terrain
The are plenty of challenges for the development of a national infrastructure in Switzerland. All national infrastructures are now looking for underground solutions for their next expansion steps in order to relieve the surface areas of Switzerland.
The Cargo sous terrain project, financed under private law, will be implemented almost exclusively underground on the basis of the new federal law on underground goods transport – UGüTG. CST is therefore in line with the development of staying away from the constant expansion of above-ground infrastructure, which will inevitably reach its limits in the coming years. CST is establishing new transport routes that run underground between the larger centres.
Cargo sous terrain is a general logistics system that helps to relieve cantons and municipalities from the ever-increasing freight traffic. The presentation highlights the challenges of planning underground and the solutions of a Cargo sous terrain approach.
