Creating smart and sustainable cities

The SmartSuisse trade fair and congress will feature a range of smart city themes as part of the Sustainability Days, which are taking place in Basel on March 28 and 29. SmartSuisse is the leading smart city platform in Switzerland.

Smart cities promise to solve urgent issues linked to urbanisation, such as overloaded transport, energy and water supply systems, housing shortages and inclusion. For Switzerland, the city ecosystem offers significant potential to drive innovation. This requires creativity, innovation, courage and a willingness to experiment. The first steps towards becoming a smart city involve linking all stakeholders and establishing a shared understanding of digitisation to further improve quality of life in Switzerland. Smart City Zurich is already doing this, for example by creating “MeinQuartier.Zuerich”, an online platform where residents can enter into dialogue with local organisations. And technologies like HoloPLANNING and Building Information Modeling (BIM), which make use of augmented reality and digital 3D visualisations, are being used in the construction industry. Testing self-driving public transport vehicles is also part of Zurich’s digital city strategy.

SmartSuisse – the leading Swiss platform for smart city themes

As part of the Sustainability Days, which are being held at Messe Basel on March 28 and 29, 2023, and organised by the MCH Group, SmartSuisse will feature, discuss and connect a range of relevant themes under the motto “Smart up Your City”. The themes are governance, mobility, energy & environment, infrastructure and health. SmartSuisse consists of a congress and a trade fair – over 1,000 political, administrative, economic and academic decision-makers are expected to be in attendance. They will meet more than 60 smart manufacturers and service providers, including providers of smart mobility, infrastructure and ICT solutions and applications. In addition, visitors to the congress will receive insight into the five themes from more than 100 speakers, who will address current research and smart city technologies in various talks, case studies and panel discussions. Confirmed keynote speakers include Thomas Rau – innovator, entrepreneur, architect and one of the pioneers of the circular economy, Tigran Haas, Tenured Associate Professor for Urban Design + Planning at KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm) and Lukas Engelberger, President of the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Health Directors (GDK) and Head of the Department of Health for the Cantonal Council of Basel-Stadt. With a unique blend of strategy and concrete solutions, SmartSuisse introduces innovative ideas for new business models and processes, identifies the latest trends and brings together cross-sectoral decision-makers from councils and municipalities, economics, research and associations to drive sustainable development in urbanisation.

Dinner party for cross-platform networking

A dinner and networking party on the evening of the first day represents a further highlight. It provides an opportunity for informal networking across all four platforms. In this way, the Sustainability Days are making a contribution to a sustainable future for the economy, society and the environment. Play your part by actively shaping the future, establishing new contacts, continuing to educate yourself through knowledge sharing, learning about innovative offers and enhancing your own reputation.
